Douglas Blue Feather and Mike Borger at the Mihshihkinaahkwa Pow Wow at Columbia City, Indiana
Renowned Native American Music flute musician and Space Music Artist Douglas Blue Feather made a powerful impact at the the Pow Wow held at Morsches’ Park in Columbia City, Indiana. Columbia City is located about 20 miles west of Fort Wayne on on U.S. Highway 30. I had the privilege of being in the audience as Douglas Blue Feather played Native American flute joined by fellow musicians Danny Voris on guitar and Jay Luis on bass at the Friday evening Pow Wow opening. The trio featured music from their new CD “Rollin’ Like Thunder” and featured a stunningly beautiful collection of songs that soared with the impeccable purity of the Great Spirit and also moved with great power and passion.
A key interest of mine is new age music and space music serving as healing music that is of great benefit to the mind, body, and spirit. As I sat in the audience and was transported with this amazing Native American based music, I could feel my spirit lift and all stress and cares left my being. I was one with the beauty and majesty of the soaring flute melody, the rhythmic pulse of the drums, guitar, bass and rhythmic instruments. Anyone listening was carried away to deep forests and woodlands, far from the impact of modern civilization. I was out in the Great Plains, one with the antelope, prarie dog and buffalo. I felt kinship with the beautiful outdoor life and harmony of the Native American tradiition – harmony with self, others, and nature. Being in that audience, I was experiencing healing music first hand.
Another aspect of healing music was that of the music and musicians interacting with nature and the world around us. The Pow Wow was set up in a traditional sacred space. The site was a beautiful grassy open setting ringed by forest with a lovely natural stream running by. The concert began in the evening and the sun was quite hot for a while, but the sun soon went down and the heat gave way to a beautiful cool evening lit by the crescent moon and stars. Listeners could not help but notice how the music itself combined harmoniously with the natural environment and promoted a seamless unity of peace and tranquility.
Douglas Blue Feather and his fellow musicians demonstrated the powerful effectiveness of healing music. I would suggest that all space music and new age music that seeks to be healing music has a strong debt to Native American traditions, culture, and musical contribution. This is healing music of the highest order. This is the kind of music that can turn this world around for the better.
Danny Voris, Douglas Blue Feather, Jay Luis
One strength of the Douglas Blue Feather ensemble is that of unity from diversity. Douglas Blue Feather is clearly an embodiment of the Native American flute music tradition, and every song and note he plays is informed by that tradition. Danny Voris, who played a masterful nylon acoustic guitar solo of his own music, revealed his background in the classical guitar of Andres Segovia, Flamenco guitar, and modern acoustic guitar influences like Leo Kottke. Voris was equally impressive playing strong electric guitar and acoustic guitar along with the ensemble. His driving guitar rhytms and leads propelled the music in both an energetic and thoughtful fashion. Bassist Jay Luis also played a masterful solo that ranged from jazz and funk sounds and rhythms to rock sounds reminiscent of Chris Squire of the band Yes. Jay Luis had a flowing, propelling style that moved the music forward throughout the performance, creating a totally dynamic substrate for Douglas Blue Feather’s flute and Danny Voris’ guitar. The result of these varying styles working together was a hard-hitting tour de force that made your spirit soar even as your toe tapped along irresistably.
